Experience

Cambridge Ultrasonics has been active since 1986 in advanced research into techniques for inspecting concrete using ultrasound. The broad goal is to advance the technology to the point of producing images of the interior of concrete to assist in cost-effective maintenance programmes for owners of large concrete structures.

We have been leading contributors to a number of collaborative projects and European projects in this field over the last 15 years. These have included:

• Two collaborative European projects supported by the European Commission (Cambridge Ultrasonics was lead partner in both).
• A German national project supported by the German Concrete Asociation (DAFSTB) and several German construction companies (Cambridge Ultrasonics provided all transducers and hardware, much of the software, concept and guided the development of software by German research staff).
• Several UK national projects including two in Concrete Offshore in the Nineties and projects supported by the Transport Reseach Laboratory.

Our areas of particular expertise are in:

• Design and development of novel transducers for concrete. These typically have high coupling efficiency and wide bandwidth, which allow modern signal processing methods to be used.
• Application of advanced signal processing methods to concrete inspection.
